Things To Do While The World Cup Is On (If You Don’t Like Football)

June 28, 2018

While the World Cup is taking over terrestrial TV it can be difficult to get away from it (if you aren’t a fan of football). We have compiled a list of things to do instead of watching fixtures like Tunisia vs Panama.

Cinema

With no outside noise, not only will you avoid any football talk but also set yourself in an environment as far away from sport. Pick n Mix in one hand and a gallon of Cola in the other, you can burrow into a comfy cinema sofa and be absorbed by a much more interesting ‘giant screen’.

If you are ‘classics’ fan, you can see the latest in two famous sets – Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom or Solo: A Star Wars Story.

For a giggle, Deadpool 2 will tickle you (if you don’t take yourself too seriously) and Book Club offers a nice slow paced, enjoyable watch.

Whatever you choose, there won’t be a chant of ‘Vindaloo’ or ‘Three Lions’ within ears distance!

Parkrun

With a couple weeks of sunshine expected, what better than to spend the best part of the day in the great outdoors? Every Saturday at 9 am, parks across the UK host thousands of runners and walkers raising the heart rate in an enjoyable environment, in a fun, no pressure environment.

All you need to do is register online and print off your own bar-code to hand over when you finish the 5K route. To find out where your local park run is go to www.parkrun.org.uk

Its totally free, fully marshalled and there are no time restrictions – in fact, every parkrun has a tail-walker, so you cant finish last! Minimum age to participate in parkrun is just 5 years old, so it really is a family affair.

Meditation

If you can find a quiet corner (I’d suggest checking the football fixtures and avoiding those times so that you don’t get distracted by intermittent screams at the TV), meditation is a great way to de-stress and unwind.

If you have never tried it before, your first point of call should be one of the many tutorials online. Here is just one example http://how-to-meditate.org/meditation-videos/

While everyone else in the county sees their heart rate and stress levels increase as England progress in the tournament, you can bring yours down and enjoy some ‘me time’.

Library Membership

The forgotten blessing. Remember when we all had a library card at school? In a day of tablets and kindles, libraries are less and less populated. Now hosting computer services as well as books, the library is a peaceful oasis of literature and knowledge. Maybe you can learn interesting facts about England’s next opponents in the World Cup to share with the family or friends when they are glued to the football. Or maybe not….

Theme Park Deals

Whether you have kids or not, the UK’s theme parks are a ‘fun for all’ environment. Scattered across the country, most of us are within a manageable driving distance from our nearest.
